LEO

Wow! We had a great time at LEO from the Walton Arts Center. The performer, Julian, even visited with us during lunch! I couldn't record the performance, but there is a link below to a video on You Tube from it.

Here is a link you can check out to see what the show was like : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGpqNUQuKR4
LEO, the performance, combines acrobatics, movement and theatre.
What an amazing opportunity for our students!

Video Introductions

As part of our new and improved literacy stations, the students have to create a 30 second introduction of themselves. We critique some as a class and give feedback according to a rubric. Then the students can take that feedback and make it better. This learning experience improves their writing, reading, and fluency in a real, authentic way. It also challenges them to accept constructive criticism and make their work better. Of course, we still have some room to grow, but these videos are examples of where some of the students are right now. Pretty soon we are moving to the students creating video critiques of books they are reading.

Underground Railroad Reenactment

As part of our Unit entitled "A Long Journey to Freedom", we recreated the Underground Railroad. The teachers were conductors leading escaped slaves (students) through various stations or safe areas along the "railroad". Dr. Stewman, Mr. Worthy, Mrs. Christy, and Mrs. Meeks were patrollers looking for and catching "slaves" who were loud or didn't hide. At each station, there were photos from this time period in American History that students observed and made inferences about. It was great fun, and a meaningful learning experience as well. Hope your child tells you about it!

This was how we recreated hiding in wagons.
